Poverty Through My Eyes.

April 9th, 2008 by 5thgrade

Poverty through my eyes is not having enough money to pay your taxes each month, or not having enough food to eat. When I think of poverty, I think of not having a good paying job. This poverty is different from other places in the world, like in Africa. Poverty is like that in my eyes. I hope that Montrose continues to work on this problem always!

You had some great comments. You’re right, poverty might be not being able to pay your taxes. That reminds me of something else we’re doing in Montrose this year. An accountant who grew up in Montrose is coming back to provide one day of free tax services for some of our senior citizens. They need to file their tax return this year in order to get money back from the government as part of President Bush’s economic stimulus plan. But many senior citizens don’t normally file a tax return because they’re no longer making money–they live on what we call a set income from their social security or savings. So, this man will be helping these senior citizens and he won’t charge any fee. Isn’t that a great way to help reduce poverty? It’s also a great example of someone giving their time and talents to share. The Montrose Methodist Church is donating its fellowship hall as a meeting place, and others will volunteer their time to help. You’re right. Montrose is a caring and sharing place, and we are continuing to work together!

    Thanks for blogging.
