Poverty Through My Eyes!

April 9th, 2008 by 5thgrade

What is poverty? In my eyes poverty means poor. Montrose’s poverty is different then poverty in Africa. Here in the little town of Montrose we don’t have people starving and living on the streets because each and everyone of us cares for each other. In Montrose we share or donate things such as food and clothing to not only those in need but those in other towns as well. If you just take a little time and think about the poverty in the little town of Montrose we are pretty fortunate. You can’t always rely on everybody else to help you on your journey through life!

    Annie,
I like your statement of helping people through their journey in life. It reminds me that people like senior citizens, who are on a fixed income (that means they’re no longer working and getting a paycheck, but living off of social security or their savings) are at a point in their journey when they might need more resources–like rides to the doctor, or to the grocery store, or to go shopping for other things they may need. Or maybe they can no longer do their own house repairs, or shovel their walks after snow. Can that be a type of poverty? Can our community do things to help–like having a place they can call if they need a ride, or pair them with a young person who could cut their lawn or shovel their walks? That’s another way we’re trying to help with poverty.

If you’ve got any other ideas, please let us know! We love hearing from you. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for writing Annie, I have enjoyed reading all you 5th graders blogs. It makes me feel very proud of all of you that you are caring young people. It is nice to live in a small town because it seems like everyone looks out for each other. We are new to Montrose and so far I am not aware of people who may suffer due to poverty. If I did I would want to help them the best that I could. So let us know if you know someone who needs help. Connie said it very well maybe it might be someone that needs help around their home. We need you young people to see these things for us as we may not be looking in the right spot. Keep on blogging, we enjoy hearing from you.
